作者汤普生，一八四七年十一月七日生于美国俄亥俄州东利物浦，一八七零年入读波士顿音乐学院，毕业后远赴欧洲深造。他少年得志，年纪轻轻就在音乐界闯出名堂，后来在慕迪并其他人影响下，开始写福音诗歌。汤普生一生与音乐结下不解缘， 他创立两家音乐出版社，一家在东利物浦，一家在芝加哥，后来更兼做零售。这位音乐商虽然身家丰厚，却平实朴素、得人敬爱、谦恭敬主，向来最爱以歌会友。 据称，慕迪临终之际，汤普生有幸陪伴在侧。“威尔，”慕迪说：“我一生做了很多事——但我宁愿自己是《主慈声呼唤》的作者！”这首布道诗歌是世界各地布道聚会的热门选择，也是散基的献唱金曲。
