Elisha出生在宾夕法尼亚州的Orwigsburg。在费城的公共教育之后，他参加了在新柏林的联合神学院。在1868年，他接受了长老会的授任。像他所命名的先知一样，以利沙不是一个轻易放弃的人。他在俄亥俄州，伊利诺伊州和密歇根州牧会，在伊利诺伊州卡伯特省做了11年，之后在密歇根州本顿港做了33年。以利沙还在福音派协会的出版社（俄亥俄州，克利夫兰）工作了11年。他编辑了50本歌曲，并写了他的2000多首赞美诗。如同作者们一样，这些歌曲具有持久的品质来鼓励并激励我们服事神。
